HISTORY OF THE GROUP
The founder of the Adamjee Group was Adamjee Haji Dawood who was born in India 1880. He started his business career in Burma (now known as Myanmar) by trading in rice and jute and later established the largest match factory in Asia in the same country. By the end of the Second World War, Mr. Adamjee Haji Dawood had put up a jute mill in Calcutta and was subsequently knighted in 1933 by the British Government for his work as a philanthropist and for financing a number of educational institutes.
Towards the end of the 1960’s, the Adamjee Group owned and managed over thirty enterprises. With the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, the group lost most of its businesses overnight. Later in the 1970’s, the Muslim Commercial Bank, established by the oldest son of Sir Adamjee Haji Dawood, was nationalized along with Adamjee Life Insurance.
Despite all the setbacks, the fourth generation of the Adamjee family continues to operate and manage various businesses in and outside Pakistan. The enterprises owned and managed by the oldest grandson of Sir Adamjee Haji Dawood, Mr. M. Hanif Adamjee include the following:
Mr. M. Hanif Adamjee holds the position of Chairman of all the above mentioned companies and also heads the Board of Trustees of Adamjee Foundation which, in the spirit of its founder, continues to do a great deal of social work in the country including running a school and an Eye Institute.
